ARIS Electric Actuators Are Now Part of the Kinetrol Family: What US Engineers Should Know

ARIS Electric Actuators

If you've specified a Kinetrol pneumatic actuator at some point, you already know the company's reputation for tough, long-lived quarter-turn hardware. What you may not know yet is that Kinetrol has added a second chapter to the story: a German electric actuator specialist called ARIS Stellantriebe. Here's who they are, where their products have earned a following in Europe, and where we think they can solve problems for US plants and OEMs.

Who is ARIS Stellantriebe?

ARIS Stellantriebe GmbH is based in Troisdorf, near Cologne, Germany. The company has been designing and building electric actuators for more than 50 years, and it still develops and manufactures them at its home site, from the first design sketch through series production. Engineering, assembly and testing all sit under one roof, and the quality system is certified to ISO 9001.

In May 2025, UK-based Kinetrol Limited acquired 100 percent of the shares in ARIS. The management team and the people who build the products stayed in place, so the engineering knowledge didn't walk out the door. The combination makes a lot of sense: Kinetrol brings pneumatic rotary actuators and a global sales and service network, and ARIS brings electric actuation. Between them, you can now get both from one source.

What does ARIS make?

The ARIS range covers a lot of ground, but it breaks down into a few families:

  • Tensor and Tensor² electric actuators. These are fully electronically controlled, multi-turn rotary and part-turn drives. They use a brushless DC motor, a low-backlash metal gear train and contactless position sensing, so there's no wear on the feedback side. Settings are adjusted through a menu on an OLED display, and external gear stages can extend output torque up to about 500 Nm.
  • Nano, Nano+ and Classic Line actuators. These are the all-rounders. They use synchronous motors and spur gears, and they come with a broad choice of options such as auxiliary switches, potentiometers, position feedback, positioners and manual override. Output shafts can be built to your specification.
  • Explosion-protected actuators. The ExTensor series is approved for potentially explosive gas and dust atmospheres under the European ATEX directive and is certified to IECEx. ARIS also offers a spring-return rotary drive for Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas.
  • Linear actuators and damper drives. Used for dampers, flaps and linear positioning jobs.
  • Pneumatic rack-and-pinion actuators, industrial valves and gas control components. ARIS also supplies complete valve and actuator assemblies, delivered ready to install.

Where ARIS has found success in Europe

ARIS actuators tend to show up where precision, reliability and compact size matter more than raw size. In Europe, the company has built its business in environmental engineering, pharmaceuticals, food processing, heating and utilities. Typical jobs include metering and dosing pumps, industrial burners, boilers, autoclaves, and air handling and conditioning. The company also builds gas conditioning and control components and has shown its explosion-protected drives at hydrogen industry events, which tells you where it sees its future.

Where these actuators could fit in the US market

Based on what has worked in Europe, here are the US applications where we think ARIS has the best chance to make a difference.

Combustion and industrial heating

Burner air, fuel and damper positioning is a classic electric actuator job. Repeatable positioning matters here, because it affects efficiency and emissions. ARIS drives are already used to control oil, gas and dual-fuel burners in Europe, and the same need exists in US boilers, process heaters and furnaces.

Water, wastewater and chemical dosing

Municipal and industrial treatment plants rely on accurate chemical feed and on valves that must move smoothly and hold position. Electronically controlled actuators with torque monitoring are a natural fit for dosing pumps and for butterfly and ball valve automation.

Pharmaceutical, food and beverage

Hygienic plants value compact, maintenance-free actuators with good position feedback. Applications such as autoclaves, process valves and dosing equipment are areas where ARIS has built a track record.

HVAC and building systems

Damper and flap control on large air handling systems is a long-standing application, and Kinetrol is already well known for damper actuation.

Hydrogen and gas handling

As US hydrogen and renewable gas projects move forward, the need for explosion-protected electric actuation will grow with them. This is where the ExTensor family is aimed. One practical note: ATEX and IECEx are European and international certification schemes. US facilities generally work to NEC and NFPA classifications and expect approvals from recognized US testing bodies, so it's worth confirming the exact certification for your project early. Our team can walk you through that.

OEMs and skid builders

ARIS is comfortable with custom work, including special output shafts, electronics and OEM versions. If you build packaged systems and need a drive tailored to your design, that flexibility is worth a conversation.

Sold and supported by Kinetrol USA

You don't have to import anything from Germany yourself. ARIS electric actuators are sold and supported in the United States by Kinetrol USA, the team that has served American customers since 1982 from its facility in Plano, Texas. They stock product and spares, handle light manufacturing and assembly, and provide the kind of application help that you only get from people who've done this for decades.

If you're already running Kinetrol pneumatic actuators, you can bring your electric needs to the same people. If you're new to both, you'll get one team that can look at your application and tell you honestly whether electric or pneumatic is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns ARIS Stellantriebe?

ARIS has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Kinetrol Limited since May 2025. It continues to operate from Troisdorf, Germany.

Where can I buy ARIS electric actuators in the United States?

Through Kinetrol USA, based in Plano, Texas.

Are ARIS actuators available for explosive atmospheres?

Yes. ARIS makes explosion-protected electric actuators certified to ATEX and IECEx. For US installations, check the required hazardous-area approval with Kinetrol USA before you order.

What is the difference between electric and pneumatic actuators?

Pneumatic actuators use compressed air and are valued for speed, simplicity and fail-safe spring return. Electric actuators need only power and a signal, offer precise positioning and feedback, and suit sites without a reliable air supply. Many plants use both.

Can ARIS build a custom actuator?

Yes. ARIS regularly adapts output shafts, electronics and housings for customer projects and OEM requirements.
